Volvo 480 Seatbelt Extender

This seatbelt extender for a 480 Series Volvo was created as a full reproduction. These extenders are prone to breaking when someone gets in to the back seat of the car and often need replacing.

3D Scanning

Link

The first step in reproducing the seatbelt extender involved scanning the original part. As the part was geometrically complex this required multiple scans to get satisfactory results.

3D File Optimisation

After a 3D mesh was generated it was checked for dimensional consistency with the original part. The seatbelt extender had a small snap fit pin which was modelled in.

Any inconsistencies which could cause problems during production were removed in this phase.

Part Production

Link

The original seatbelt extender was injection moulded out of ABS plastic. The required strength along with the complex geometry made this part very well suited for SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) 3D printing.

The material chosen for the first batch was PA12 Nylon due to its high strength and temperature resistance.
